The Issue
Cambodia's History
Pol Pot’s regime, which ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, was a period of extreme violence and social upheaval. The Khmer Rouge’s policies led to the deaths of around 1.7 million people through execution, forced labour, and starvation, leaving a lasting impact on the nation.
The legacy of Pol Pot’s regime continues to impact Cambodia as both the people and the government work to rebuild the nation. Despite these efforts, economic challenges persist, keeping many families in poverty and leaving children, particularly in rural areas, vulnerable.
In these regions, some girls are pressured to leave school early to support their families by working in various establishments. This situation creates significant barriers for rural children in Cambodia, impacting their ability to achieve a secure and stable future.
The Path Forward
An essential aspect of the solution is to assist rural communities with educational initiatives and active participation in community-led development projects.
By helping children return to school and providing extracurricular life skills programs, we give them the opportunities they need to build a brighter future. Additionally, active involvement in community-led initiatives, such as sanitation projects, allows these communities to address immediate needs and develop sustainable, locally-driven solutions.
Despite its challenges, this journey holds the promise of a more hopeful path for Cambodia’s children and their villages.
